Building A Better World Together Mural

Ybor City in Tampa, Florida was founded in 1885 by Vincente Martinez-Ybor a Spanish cigar maker who relocated his cigar operations from Key West to Tampa.

The move transformed Tampa almost overnight. What had been a small Gulf Coast town became a booming center, attracting thousands of people from Cuba, Spain, Italy, Germany, and later, Eastern Europe.

Cigar making became the backbone of the local economy. At its peak, Ybor City made millions of hand-rolled cigars every year and was considered the “Cigar Capital of the World”

The workers -known as tabaqueros- brought with them their own family values, community structures, and a passion for politics.

In cigar factories, a person would be made a reader, or lector, would read newspaper, literature and political texts aloud while workers hand-rolled cigars.

The practice helped with the communities identity and maintained strong ties across time and passed down from family to family.

As the decades passed, Ybor City evolved through growth, decline and a rebirth,

The collapse of the cigar industry in the mid-20th century left many buildings empty. However the 1980s and 1990s saw overall efforts that transformed the area into an arts and cultural district.

Today Ybor City is a blend of old and new, older buildings are now housing restaurants, breweries, art studios, shops, and event venues.
